Malnutrition and hair loss

hair loss

Hair loss can sometimes be caused by lack of protein in the diet. Some people who go on diets that exclude protein or have abnormal eating habits may develop protein malnutrition. When this happens, the body will help save protein by moving hair that grows in the resting phase. Increased hair loss can occur 2 to 3 months later.

This condition can be reversed and prevented by eating the right amount of protein and, when dieting, to maintain an adequate intake of protein. For adults, this means 2 to 3 servings of protein per day. Proteins are found in meat, poultry, fish, eggs, cheeses, legumes, tofu, cereals and nuts.
